What is Notion AI?

Notion AI is the AI capability within Notion workspaces, centered around pages, knowledge bases, project tasks, and databases. The types of questions it’s best suited for aren’t typically “Please write an introduction,” but rather “Based on our existing project documentation, identify the reasons for the delay and organize the to-do list on the project page.” The location of the information, team member permissions, and database structure directly influence what Notion AI can accomplish.

The Notion team launched a closed beta of Notion AI on November 16, 2022, and made it available to all users on February 22, 2023. Early focus was on in-page writing, summarization, and rewriting; Notion 3.0, released in September 2025, introduced Agents, extending capabilities to multi-step pages and database operations. In which situations is it worth using?

Project managers can store requirements documents, meeting minutes, and task databases within the same project, allowing AI to help track open items; operations teams can identify common issues from a set of post-event review pages and use them to create checklists for the next event; and new team members can ask questions based on the team’s knowledge base and follow the references back to the original policies or operational documents.

This assumes the data is sufficiently clear. A task database that lacks a “Responsible Person” field and uses a mix of status names will not yield reliable project progress updates, even with AI integration. Standardizing fields and data ownership is generally more effective than constantly adding new prompts.
