On October 29, 2026, Serval, an enterprise automation company, announced the completion of a $150 million Series C funding round, valuing the company at $3 billion, with Sequoia Capital leading the round.Funding Announcement

It is worth noting what this company is set to take over: employee requests, equipment and assets, authorization approvals, and business records related to cross-departmental processes. When AI becomes capable of writing automated workflows, the budget it secures may expand from that of a support tool to funds the company originally allocated for purchasing and maintaining its core service platforms.

From Processing Work Orders to Mastering Business Records

An enterprise service management system is somewhat like a company’s internal dispatch center. Whether it’s figuring out who to call to fix a broken computer, determining what accounts a new employee needs, or identifying who approves a system change—all of these tasks are tracked here with status updates and records of responsibility. Serval’s product suite already covers work orders, a knowledge base, access management, and a configuration management database (CMDB) that tracks device and system dependencies.Products and Features

This approach is appealing because automation needs to know what stage the process has reached and must also write the execution results back to the system. Simply understanding the problem is still a long way from actually completing the task, as there are still barriers such as permissions, assets, and approval workflows to overcome. By integrating process generation with business records, we have the opportunity to reduce these coordination costs.

The term “core” here refers to internal corporate services and process records; it should not be extrapolated to include all corporate systems, such as the general ledger and supply chain. Serval must first firmly establish its responsibilities within this scope.

Even more difficult to change is the division of responsibilities within an organization. When a process goes wrong, a company may need its IT department to troubleshoot scripts, its business department to explain rules, and its vendors to inspect the platform. Consolidating these tasks into a single system can shorten the troubleshooting process and place a greater burden of stability on the new platform. Whether a company is willing to migrate depends largely on whether it believes this responsibility can be effectively assumed.

Let AI write the workflow and let the code handle the execution

Catalyst officially launched on August 20. According to the official documentation, employees can provide it with historical work orders, standard operating procedures, or natural-language requests to generate workflows, forms, and cross-team tasks. It inherits the user’s permissions, its scope of activity is limited to the team workspace, and generated content is first saved as a draft; publication permissions and review steps are controlled by the organization.Official Release Notes

Serval describes the underlying workflow as deterministic TypeScript code that can be tested, audited, and deployed.Code Workflow Description This means that AI can be responsible for translating vague requirements into executable logic, which is then repeatedly executed by a validated program.

Take employee resignation as an example: the real challenges often lie in questions like “When should which account be deactivated?” and “What should be done if the handover isn’t complete?” While code can define a fixed execution sequence, it cannot automatically ensure that corporate policies are followed correctly; failures in external APIs, outdated data, and exceptional approvals still need to be handled. Determinism describes the execution logic—it does not guarantee that business outcomes will never contain errors.

Therefore, when evaluating the capabilities of such products, one must not only consider how quickly they generate workflows, but also whether reviewers can understand them, whether anomalies can be detected, and whether a clear point of accountability can be identified in the event of an error.

Between Replacement and Overlay, There’s Still a Transfer to Settle

Serval offers two paths: becoming a comprehensive enterprise service management platform, or integrating with existing systems as an automation layer. Its work order product page also describes two-way synchronization with third-party platforms.Deployment Plan,Work Order Integration

This creates different starting points for procurement. Keeping the old system in place for the time being can limit the scope of the initial deployment, but the company will still need to maintain data and rules on both systems. A complete replacement offers the opportunity to reduce duplicate spending, but it requires migrating historical data, integration relationships, and employee habits.

Serval stated that an automaker completed a company-wide ServiceNow replacement in 45 days, covering IT service management, CMDB, hardware and software assets, and cross-departmental workflows. This is a single case disclosed by the vendor and should not be directly used as a benchmark for migration timelines at other companies.Migration Case Study

The official website currently uses a sales approach that involves pilot testing followed by customized solutions, and does not list public unit prices.Pricing Methods From the buyer’s perspective, “saving money” requires taking into account subscription fees, implementation costs, parallel operation, and ongoing maintenance. An increase in automation does not necessarily mean a proportional decrease in labor costs: someone still needs to check for those rare but costly errors.

Our longtime rival is also revamping its automation system.

Serval is not competing in a static, traditional software market. Both ServiceNow and Atlassian have already integrated agents into their service management and workflow products. Several approaches are converging, so when making a purchase decision, it is more useful to compare where they integrate into the business.

Product Roadmap Official Product Focus Companies should focus on verifying
Serval Catalyst Automate the generation of business materials; review and test before deployment; can replace or integrate with existing platforms Cross-system process quality and post-migration maintenance effort
ServiceNow AI Agent Studio builds agents; Workflow Data Fabric connects data and enforces governance To what extent can existing data and processes be reused, and how complex are the new configurations?

Atlassian has also incorporated the automated creation and execution of complex service workflows into its product offerings, including employee onboarding scenarios.AI Capabilities for Service Management Now that natural language creation has gradually become a common capability, Serval needs to demonstrate that the benefits of switching platforms are sufficient to offset the costs of migration; established vendors, meanwhile, must prove that the complexity of their existing platforms will not negate the efficiency gains brought by AI.

For companies that already have a large number of customized processes, selecting pilot scenarios with clearly defined authority boundaries—where failures can be handled manually—makes it easier to obtain valid evidence. Using the same work orders, approval requirements, and success criteria for comparison is also more valuable than watching different demonstrations.

The Delivery Challenge Behind 100 Engineers

The funding announcement also includes a set of noteworthy figures: Serval plans to hire more than 500 people over the next 12 months, with more than 100 of them joining ProServal, a newly established professional services team, as automation engineers.Recruitment and Service Program

Lowering the barriers to the development process while expanding the delivery team is not a contradiction. Tools can shorten development time, but people are still needed to clarify processes, coordinate across departments, and define the scope of deployment. The real business challenge is whether this on-the-ground experience can be distilled into reusable capabilities, enabling future clients to go live with fewer resources.

If the implementation team must be expanded proportionally with each new batch of customers, growth will continue to be constrained by delivery capacity. Conversely, if the service team consistently turns exceptions into standard capabilities, the product may achieve better economies of scale.

A $3 billion valuation is a bet on the latter outcome. In the next phase, what will be more indicative than the amount of funding raised will be the stable operation and contract renewals of customers after go-live, as well as whether unit delivery costs are decreasing. AI is approaching the most valuable segment of enterprise software, and whether it can remain there in the long term will be determined by these day-to-day metrics.
