Kimi has focused this round of upgrades on programming, 3D creation, and financial research. From the user’s perspective, it will be worth observing whether long tasks can be delivered consistently and how a balance is struck between speed, cost, and manual review.

In the official research update on October 24, Kimi introduced K3.1 Pro: It is based on K3 with further training, supports a context size of one million tokens, and was launched alongside the Highspeed version. The full model weights are scheduled to be released by November 4; please note that “available online” does not currently mean the weights are open for download. The product is now accessible via Kimi’s web interface, Work, Code, and API.Official Technical Overview.;Official Research Index

How can this promotion be considered beneficial to my work?

Writing a function correctly is one thing; taking over a project is quite another. In real-world projects, you often need to first understand the existing code, then identify the problem, modify multiple files, run tests, and finally explain the changes. If any step is overlooked, it can render all the previous reasoning useless.

In Kimi’s internally released long-task programming evaluation, the K3.1 Pro scored 61.2%, while the K3 scored 55.95%. This provides some indication of progress, but since it is an internal evaluation by the manufacturer, it cannot be directly converted into a specific team’s delivery success rate. A more valuable way to evaluate the systems is to have both versions process the same set of historical issues, using the same permissions, tools, and time budget, to see whether the results pass the existing tests and how much manual correction is still required.Testing Instructions

The criteria for evaluation here should be similar to those for a work acceptance. For a fix, regression testing is essential; when creating 3D assets, dimensions, structure, and export files must be checked; and when analyzing financial data, each item must be traced back to the original source and calculation process. While it is certainly important for the output to resemble the final product, the closer it gets to a deliverable state, the more crucial it becomes to distinguish between “looking correct” and “being verified as correct.”

One million contexts, to be used to preserve constraints

A broad context is suitable for large codebases, lengthy documents, and extensive task logs; however, it does not guarantee that the model will give equal weight to every piece of information. A practical approach is to first clarify the task objectives, non-negotiable conditions, and acceptance criteria, and then organize the material by source. Include sources for key figures, provide reproducible steps for code issues, and summarize stage conclusions separately.

For example, when analyzing changes in operations across fiscal years, reports from different years may be provided together; however, the model should still be required to indicate any changes in scope, units, and original page numbers. Including more material primarily reduces the burden of repeatedly transferring information; however, the need to evaluate conflicting data, identify erroneous citations, and determine ultimate responsibility does not disappear simply because the scope has been expanded.

It’s also important to distinguish between model limits and plan permissions. According to the official Kimi Code documentation, the K3.1 Pro model is available to Plus and Moderato plans and above, while the maximum of one million context units and the Highspeed feature require the Pro or Allegretto plans and above; this series only supports Thinking Mode. Existing users are advised to open a new session for testing to avoid behavioral and caching changes that may result from switching models in an existing session.Kimi Code Release Notes

For the "High-Speed" version, you should look at how much time the entire task saves.

Officials say Highspeed offers approximately 2 to 3 times the speed for models of the same quality. This is appealing for interactive tasks that involve waiting for feedback, but the speed of model output is only one part of the entire process. Retrieving and downloading data, running tests, and waiting for external tools can all become new bottlenecks.Kimi Code Release Notes

Therefore, when comparing versions, in addition to the first-character response and generation speed, it is even more important to record the total time from task issuance to acceptance, the number of retries after failures, and the actual resources consumed. A solution that is faster but requires multiple rounds of corrections may not necessarily be more cost-effective than a slightly slower solution that passes acceptance on the first try. For larger code modifications, intermediate checkpoints should also be maintained to prevent speed advantages from turning into a faster proliferation of errors.

Developers now have another integration option: On October 23, Vercel announced that two models have been added to AI Gateway and can be accessed via the AI SDK and various compatible APIs. The benefit is that it makes it easier to switch between and compare models within existing applications; however, this does not mean that latency, quotas, or data processing terms are exactly the same across different service providers.Vercel Integration Announcement

Teams planning to deploy the system on their own can prepare test sets and capacity budgets at this stage, but should not commit to a migration date in advance. After the weights are released, they should still confirm actual licensing, inference framework support, deployment resources, and maintenance costs. For enterprises, while the ability to control data flow is certainly important, stable operation, version upgrades, and fault recovery also require investment. Performance during the online trial can help determine whether to continue the evaluation, but it cannot replace acceptance testing in your own environment.

Although indicators of hallucinations have improved, the verification process must still be maintained.

Kimi revealed that in internal, highly challenging factual stress tests, the statement-level hallucination rate dropped from 23.4% in K3 to 8.3%. The official statement specifically notes that these results do not represent the overall error rate in everyday use. Therefore, it should not be stated as “the accuracy rate reached 91.7%,” nor should the error rate of a single statement within a response be equated with the reliability of the entire report.Factual Reviews and Limitations

This round of upgrades is worth trying, but the starting point should be small and specific: choose a recurring task with verifiable results, first establish a baseline for the old process in terms of time and quality, and then compare the net benefits brought by the new model. What the team truly needs is the ability to advance complex work to a state where it can be accepted. Leaderboards can help narrow down candidates, but the decision should ultimately be guided by the team’s own tasks.
