What is ChatGPT Atlas?
ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI Officially released on 2025-10-21, a ChatGPT-centered web pagesbrowser (software)(math.) genusFully integrates browsing, searching and intelligent conversations. Without copying, pasting, or switching pages, users can summarize, translate, rewrite, or create content by invoking ChatGPT directly from the sidebar. Meanwhile, it supports “Browser Memory”, which automatically understands the user's long-term goals, research topics and continuous follow-up, and also enables “Agent Mode” to automatically perform complex tasks such as searching for information, comparing prices, and planning itineraries, thus truly realizing one-stop intelligent operation from the acquisition of information to the completion of tasks. It also enables "Agent Mode" to automatically perform complex tasks such as finding information, comparing prices, and planning trips, truly realizing one-stop intelligent operation from information acquisition to task completion. The browser also has privacy controls that allow users to decide which web pages can be accessed by the AI, whether or not to save memories or go into incognito mode.
Atlas is not just a browsing tool, it's your AI co-pilot for high-frequency search, research, writing, business decision-making, and personal productivity, representing the future direction of browser evolution.
Key Features of ChatGPT Atlas
- ChatGPT Sidebar / Conversational Assistant
- When you are on any web page, you can open a ChatGPT Sidebar and directly ask: “What is this page about? Summarize it for me”, “Rewrite this text in a more professional way”, and so on.
- Support for high-level operations: for example, if you are looking at a product page, ChatGPT can help you to Compare products, extract pros and cons, analyze data.
- Search functionality integration: you enter content in a new tab and get ChatGPT-style answers + options for exploring links/images/videos, etc.
- Browser Memories feature
- Atlas can (with your permission) remember the web pages you've viewed, the tasks you've been doing, the topics you've researched, so that the next time you come back, ChatGPT can “remember” what you were doing last time.
- You are always in control of these memories: you can view them, archive them, keep certain sites from being seen by ChatGPT, and clear the history.
-
Agent Mode
- For more complex or tedious tasks, Atlas offers “Agent Mode”: instead of just giving advice, ChatGPT Manipulate pages on behalf of users(automate some steps) - such as checking airfare, comparing prices, ordering from a shopping cart (under user monitoring), etc.
- This mode currently offers previews for Plus, Pro, and Business users.
- Note: Agent mode has instructions on permissions, security, and privacy (e.g., not accessing all your computer's files, saving passwords, automatically logging in unless you agree, etc.).
-
Edit/rewrite web content
- On a web page, if you select a piece of text (e.g., in an email, article, form), you can have ChatGPT “rewrite” it, “touch up” it, “translate” it, and so on.
-
Privacy/Control Functions
- You can choose to use it in “Stealth Mode/Incognito” without saving history and cutting off the memory function.
- By default, browsed content is not used to train OpenAI models; you can choose to turn this on if you wish.
- You can control which sites are “seen” by ChatGPT and which are not.
-
Traditional Browser Functionality + AI Enhancements
- Tabs, search bar, bookmarks, history, and other regular features of the browser are there; but AI acceleration, smart suggestions, autocomplete, and viewing modes for different media (web pages, images, videos, news) have been added.
Scenarios for ChatGPT Atlas
- Information/research collation: You're reading an academic literature or industry report page and want to get the gist of it quickly. Open the page in Atlas and open the ChatGPT sidebar to ask “Help me summarize the three key findings and future trends of this report”. At the same time, the browser remembers that you're researching the topic, so you can pick up where you left off the next time you come back.
- Writing and editing: You're writing an email, a blog, a social post on a web page, or you're filling out an online application, select the text and let ChatGPT help you touch it up, rewrite it, and translate it for you. Avoid copying and pasting back and forth.
- Shopping/Price comparisonYou can use Agent Mode to let ChatGPT help you organize the pros and cons, price trends, and even help you put the best ones into your shopping cart.
- Project management/task advancement: You're planning a trip or a new product launch, Atlas helps you summarize all the sites you've seen, pull up to-do lists, remember what you've searched for, and continue the conversation in the sidebar whenever you want.
- Browser Assistance + Learning: Students or practitioners looking at tutorials, course pages, and resource pages use the ChatGPT sidebar to ask, understand, translate, and practice questions without having to jump out of the browser.
- Private and Sensitive Occasions: You can turn on Incognito mode to turn off the memory function and keep your browser private when you are browsing sensitive web pages or content you don't want to be recorded.

Recommended Reasons
- Efficiency gains: Normally you might look up information in a web page → switch to ChatGPT → copy and paste → come back to the web page. atlas embeds the chat assistant in the web page context, reducing the friction of switching, copying and pasting.
- deep integration: Memory function + Agent mode + Web page comprehension makes ChatGPT not an “isolated chat tool” but becomes “your intelligent assistant while surfing the Internet”.
- Task automation: The Agent model is particularly valuable for tasks that require a “find→compare→decide→execute” process (e.g., shopping, travel planning, project research).
- Individualization and continuity: The Browser Memory feature allows your history, tasks, and research to be carried over, rather than starting over each time.
- More natural interaction experience: Talk directly to the AI in the context of the actual web page, rather than asking “I'm going to do X how?” in a separate window.”
- Powerful control and privacy options: You can control which pages ChatGPT does not see, whether they are memorized, and whether they are used for model training. An advantage for sensitive data or privacy needs.
- Stay ahead of future trends: AI Browser is the future of “Browser + Assistant”. Early use can help you familiarize yourself with the new model and gain an advantage.
caveat
- Limited platform support: As of now, only the official macOS version is available, and Windows, iOS, and Android versions are not yet fully available.
- Agent mode is still preview: There may be room for improvement in stability, feature coverage. User supervision is still necessary.
- Privacy and Security Risks: While there is more control, when AI performs actions in the browser (e.g., auto-clicking, placing orders), it must be carefully monitored. Certain security researchers warn against this.
- Compatibility with traditional browser ecosystems: As a new browser, plugin/extension support, compatibility, and stability may not be as good as mature browsers for the time being.
- Learning costs: Although interactive and friendly, it may take you a little while to get used to the new way of “talking to ChatGPT in your browser”.
